Be the change you want to see in the world
I watched this video today and a few others by dead prez. I really found this one interesting. The video consists of students stuck in a classroom set up to detain them, which is what classrooms often are while yelling back at the dorky, overweight teacher. Personally, I felt bad for the teacher, because, I know I probably look like him when I teach. Though, one loses sympathy for the teacher when he yells at a kid for a stupid reason. I think about the school system a lot. It's really depressing.
My wife and I both recently graduated with teaching degrees and really want to go out there and let kids be creative and explore, not be graded, talk about social issues, explore meaning. She's an art teacher and I'm a music teacher, but even in these creative fields, we are scared of what will happen to us and what we'll have to force the students to go through. For now I'm stalling in graduate school and she's teaching piano lessons. Perhaps we'll find some other way to live. It's really a shame that children don't have access to a fair education, one that they and their community control. What should a person do? Should a teacher go into the system anyway, and try to change things or just let it be? As long as the kids are forced to be there, perhaps it's ok for a teacher that's lost faith in the system to be there, too.
